Inventions that Shaped the World

Client: Discovey Channel

Agency: marblemedia

Services: Cross-Media Strategy, Creative Development, Writing, Design Concepts

About the project:

Inventions is a factual entertainment series that mixes history, science and pop culture, to present a stylized chronicle of populist inventions of the 20th Century. Each week viewers see a different decade of inventions from the last hundred years.

Fulscrn did online creative development for the show as part of a Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund application. We worked with the client and their agency to conceive an online presence that would promote the show and act as a new channel in which the audience could engage in the content.

Our idea was simple: get each of the show’s individual invention stories (about 10 an episode) into a database that users filter by time, space, purpose, popularity or keyword. Unlike the TV viewer who gets a single chronological presentation of the stories, the web user views all of the inventions via a number of beautiful and contextually rich data visualizations.

Users can click on any entry that interests them to explore the invention’s story. Online stories mirror their complimentary show segments, but are adapted from linear video to an interactive narrative form.

We can’t share the documents created for this project but we can show you some of the conceptual design sketches we produced.

“We threw a difficult project at Fulscrn, with a nearly impossible timeline. Not only did we get a fresh, creative response that exceeded our expectations, it was clearly written, and strategically positioned in a way that amplified our brand.”
